Paper Owl Fax: giving AI assistants a fax machine.

Vectis Studio built Paper Owl Fax so anyone working in Claude or another AI assistant can send a real fax without leaving the chat. It went from first commit to live payments in four days, and it's now listed on musedirectory.ai.

The problem

AI assistants can draft a letter in seconds. Then the letter has to go to a county office, a court, an insurer or a landlord that still takes faxes, and the assistant stops. People print it, find a fax machine or sign up for a fax service they'll use twice a year.

What we built

Paper Owl Fax is a connector: a small service an AI assistant can call. You ask the assistant to fax something, and it handles the rest.

  • You see it before you pay. The assistant shows the recipient, the page count and the price, and a preview link shows every page as it will print.
  • One fax, one price. $1.99 covers up to 5 pages, plus $0.25 for each page after that, up to 50 pages. No account and no subscription. Payment goes through Stripe.
  • Every page says who sent it. Each page carries a sender line with your name, the sending number, the time sent and the page number.
  • Failed faxes are refunded automatically. If a fax doesn't go through, or only part of it does, the money goes back without anyone asking.
  • The US and Canada. Any fax number in either country.

How it went

  • September 29, 2026: first commit.
  • October 1: first real fax delivered through the fax carrier, about 2 seconds after the carrier accepted it.
  • October 2: live payments switched on. The first live payment was a real $1.99 charge, refunded automatically from the carrier's test line.
  • October 2026: Paper Owl Mail added for letters and Certified Mail, from $2.99.
  • October 28: listed on musedirectory.ai.

What it shows about how we work

The same habits go into every client build:

  • Test mode first. Everything ran against test versions of the fax carrier and Stripe until it worked end to end.
  • Real money only after a real test. The first live payment was a real $1.99 test fax, refunded automatically.
  • Safety checks before every change. A secret scan, plus backups before every deploy.
  • Written records. Each step of the server setup is written down with the date.
  • Size of the build. More than 400 automated tests and about 150 commits.
